Foundation’s History

In 1975, Her Majesty Queen Rambhai Barni, Queen of King Rama VII, founded the Prajadhipok Foundation in remembrance of the benevolence of His Majesty King Prajadhipok toward Her Majesty, the nation, and the Thai people.

Her Majesty contributed assets and funds totaling 2,715,041.68 baht as of March 31, 1975, as the Foundation’s initial capital.

The Prajadhipok Foundation was officially registered with the government on December 30, 1975.

The establishment of the Foundation followed Her Majesty Queen Rambhai Barni’s residence at Suan Ban Kaew in Chanthaburi Province between 1950 and 1968.

In 1954, Her Majesty graciously commissioned the construction of a modern surgical building, which was completed in 1956 and presented to the provincial hospital in Chanthaburi. She named the building the “Prajadhipok Building.” The government subsequently expanded and renovated the hospital, which was later renamed Prapokklao Hospital, Chanthaburi.

From that time onward, Her Majesty Queen Rambhai Barni provided the “Prajadhipok Fund,” drawn from her personal funds and donations made in support of royal charitable causes, to Prapokklao Hospital and the Prapokklao College of Nursing, which was established later.

Later, when Her Majesty returned permanently to Sukhothai Palace in Bangkok, she sold Suan Ban Kaew, where she had pursued agricultural activities, to the Ministry of Education at a favorable price for use as the site of Chanthaburi Teachers College. She subsequently placed the college under her royal patronage and continued to provide financial support.

With the intention of ensuring the continuity and sustainability of these charitable endeavours, Her Majesty Queen Rambhai Barni established the Foundation’s objectives to support Prapokklao Hospital, Prapokklao College of Nursing, and Chanthaburi Teachers College.

Following Her Majesty’s passing, these institutions were subsequently renamed and reclassified as Rambhai Barni College, Rambhai Barni Rajabhat Institute, and Rambhai Barni Rajabhat University, respectively.

The Foundation provides support for the construction and procurement of materials, equipment, tools, and other necessary expenses of the three institutions, in addition to government funding. It also contributes to the “Prajadhipok’s Royal Memorial Fund” of Prapokklao College of Nursing, which provides assistance to nursing students in financial need.

The Foundation also receives donations made in support of royal charitable causes, as well as income generated from its assets.

Her Majesty Queen Rambhai Barni, Queen of King Rama VII, passed away on May 22, 1984. In her will, made in the United Kingdom, Her Majesty bequeathed a sum of money to the Foundation, further increasing the assets and returns available to support its objectives.

The Foundation’s Board of Directors subsequently resolved to increase financial support to fulfill the Foundation’s objectives, particularly for the three institutions mentioned above. This support also serves as a memorial to Her Majesty Queen Rambhai Barni, who founded the Foundation and served as its Chairperson until her passing.

The Foundation’s committee unanimously resolved to add Her Majesty’s name to the Foundation’s name. Accordingly, the “Prajadhipok Foundation” was renamed the “Prajadhipok-Rambhai Barni Foundation.” The change of name was officially registered with the government on November 11, 1985.
